The national flag of the United States (often referred to as the American flag or the U.S. flag) consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the "union"). The 48-star flag was in use from 1912 to 1959, the second longest-used U.S. flag. The current U.S. flag is the longest-used flag, having surpassed the 1912 version in 2007. The 48 stars on the flag represent the 48 U.S. states at that time, and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from Great Britain and thus became the first states in the U.S. Nicknames for the flag include the Stars & Stripes, Old Glory and the Star-Spangled Banner.
