The immediate cause of the Franco-German War was the candidacy of Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen for the Spanish throne, which alarmed France and led to the Ems Dispatch. The war marked the end of French hegemony in continental Europe and resulted in the creation of a unified Germany. Prussia's defeat of Austria in the Seven Weeks' War had confirmed its leadership of the German states, and the war with France was seen as an opportunity to build a strong German Empire.
