Royalist regiment of foot of the Oxford Army, later based at Sherborne Castle in Dorset. Active from 1642 to 1645, battles included the Storm of Brentford, the Taking of Newport Pagnell and the Siege of Melcombe and Weymouth. During the English Civil War (1662-1651), the Royalists championed the divine right of the monarch to govern England and fought against the opposing Parliamentarians. They had a deep-seated loyalty to the monarch and to the protection of King Charles I.
