The Ottoman Empire entered World War I on the side of the Central Powers and was ultimately defeated. The Ottoman participation in the war began with the combined German-Ottoman surprise attack on the Black Sea coast of the Russian Empire on 29 October 1914. Following the attack, the Russian Empire and its allies France and the British Empire declared war on them.

The Ottoman Empire used various flags and naval ensigns during its history. The star and crescent came into use in the second half of the 18th century. This design later became a common element in the national flags of Ottoman successor states in the 20th century. The current flag of Turkey is essentially the same as the late Ottoman flag.
