When Mississippi seceded from the Union on January 9, 1861, the state adopted its first official flag on January 26, 1861, known as the Magnolia Flag. Its design included a white field with a magnolia tree in the centre, a blue canton in the upper left corner with a white star, with a red fringe at the far edge. The magnolia tree symbolized the state’s identity and mirrored South Carolina’s use of the palmetto tree, while the blue canton referenced the “Bonnie Blue Flag” of the short-lived Republic of West Florida. This flag was intended to represent the newly formed Republic of Mississippi and its sovereignty, though it was not widely used during the Civil War, as Confederate national flags were more common on the battlefield.
