Made by the Ladies of Williamsburg, Virginia, and presented to the unit immediately after the Battle of Bethel in 1861. The unit was originally known as the Confederate States Zouaves, but reorganized on Nov. 10, 1862. Major Fulgence de Bordenave d'Abere was a member of the regiment; his descendants donated the flag. The Zouaves were originally a class of light infantry regiments of the French Army and other units modelled on it, which served between 1830 and 1962, mainly in French North Africa. The zouaves were among the most decorated units of the French Army, later involved in fighting for both sides of the US Civil War.
